A Seekers Walk

What does it mean to be on a seeker journey? Is it a spiritual journey of discovery for you? Are you looking for some level of enlightenment? For some it means finding a calling, a vocation, or even a sense of purpose. There is no cookie-cutter approach to hearing from God; however, there are some tried and true ways to help you get started.

One such way is to walk the walk with someone else. This person may have a number of names like soul friend, guide, or spiritual director. These are people who have gone on the journey before you, who are still on the journey, and are trained in listening to help others to make sense of the quiet (or loud) voice they are hearing. These are the people who will help you to discover your true self and to live out a purposeful life–however that looks for you.

There are times of solitude or Sabbath in which we stop talking and listen to God on our own. For me that is walking and seeking his vision in nature. It might look like sitting at the beach, or in the mountains or deserts where there is little to distract us. We might even practice contemplative prayer in these times.

Some of you may be on a different spiritual seeking walk than am I and that’s okay. Be a seeker. Be open to what may come as you walk. Look for something supernatural. Listen for that voice that speaks to your soul and guides you to a new place. And be willing to acknowledge an external power should you find it.

I spent this past weekend with a group of incredible spiritual directors. It was the culmination of nearly two years of training which led to my commissioning as a spiritual director. Seeking a closer relationship with God is what this blog is all about and I hope that somehow in sharing my seeking journey you too might draw nearer to our Lord.
